In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
