EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
