2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Reception
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer game identity.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address community desires.
A Pattern of Key Hires
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our fans.
The belief in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of the team. After several months of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having spent the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

The appointee currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 alongside a public demo. At the time, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an thrilling evolution on the category."

Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can expect more updates as development advances.
